As allot of you know, Sonny was really sick about a month ago and we were fearing the worst. He is recovering and putting the weight he lost and then some, but he is now loosing his hair! Now I did switch him to a grain free food and a different dry food so this might be the issue, but not sure what else I should be watching for....I was wondering because he lost so much weight that the shock of it made him loose his hair due to vitamin deficiency? Or if could have been the stress of the illness? Anyone else have this happen to them?

Gee, I have no idea. I do know that stress causes humans to lose their hair, so why not cats? My typist has known several women whose hair began to fall out from stress. I'm glad Sonny is feeling better and gaining wait, though Now Rosco has thin fur, and only one dog food, (which got too expensive), kept him in thicker fur. But for him, keeping him on regular healthy dog food and off of human snacks keeps his fur from getting even thinner. When he was young and Daddy was feeding him all sorts of food, his fur was thinner.

Did the vet check Sonny for a thyroid condition? Some of the symptoms in people are loss of hair, weight loss, fatigue and muscle weakness. Some of his symptoms are that of Cushing's Disease. Was he checked for that? Both of these conditions can be controlled with medicine. Then, again, it could be just stress. You also said, initially, that he had fleas. Even if the fleas are gone now, their bites may cause itching and if he's itching he may be scratching or licking himself excessively which would cause hair loss. Maybe go with this last thought before contemplating any more "stressful" testing.

Allergies are the top cause of hair loss. Perhaps he's allergic to some of his new food or has developed a skin allergy or another kind of allergy? Hormonal imbalances can cause hair loss as well such as too much thyroid. Parasites & ringworm can cause this. If he's in pain, he may be licking that area causing his hair to come out. Stress can certainly cause hair to fall out. Diabetes & cancer can cause this to happen as well. Increased levels of steroids can be another reason.
I do hope you can get to the bottom of what is going on. I've been sick myself a lot lately. My vet was able to diagnose me on my last visit, but everything came back normal on my previous visit. We still don't know why I've been so sick lately, so I know what it's like. Good luck!!

Moms boss who is a cat lover was saying that it could have been the medications they gave him while at the hospital. The used Capstan on him to kill the fleas instantly so who knows? He seems to be growing it back on his shaved spots but it just seems like it thinned right out him all over his body. We are doing a wait and see at this point since we don't want to stress him out more and is doing better with his eating and drinking.
