We live in a 850 sqft condo with our two cats Mittens and Pinecone who are both indoor only except for on the harness. Mittens will be three in a the summer and Pinecone will be 2 in a few months. Mittens has always played well with us as well as independently. Her favorite game is her version of fetch. she also loves playing with milk rings on her own and jumping off the walls like a ninja . She is also pretty petite and lean which makes for great hunting skills.
Pinecone however, is a different story. We think he might be part Maine Coone and the vet agrees because he Big stocky boy with big paws. He also is very friendly, affectionate and loves attention, quite "doglike". He is a bit on the pudgy side also. We also say he "has a heart for adventure". The problem here is he seems bored most of the time. He cries much of the time until you get up to play with him and then 30 seconds later he is bored of the game. We call him Garfield because of his lazy nature. he will hop around a few times but then he wants to lay on his back and have you dangle the bird above him so he can bat at it a few times. then he is done. five minutes later he is crying again. it seems the ONLY thing he really seems to find engaging is when we take him in the hallway of our building. he LOVES to race us running up and down. we would do that more often but we could get in trouble so we try to limit it about once a day or a few times a week. he also loves the car most of the time, loves going for walks in his harness and loves being on our patio. the trouble with the latter two is that he has to be supervised for them (we have caught him trying to jump) and its also winter. he actually went out there to grill with us last week, got his paw wet in snow and then got his fur stuck to the railing. even still he sits at the door and cries to go out. we have tons of toys also. I thought maybe he is just interested in different toys then Mits is so I got him some new toys. he does enjoy them but it seems like he will play with them a few minutes and be done and bored again. He has not one, but TWO tunnels he actually loves to run through but, still that's not enough for him.
I know many may ask if they play together and they do. He LOVES to hunt mittens and he LOVES when she chases him. he will actually come where Mittens is at and make a ROOT ROOT noise till she chases him and will whine if she refuses. the only issue is that while mittens likes to play, she is done at certain point, or is napping or grooming and will get frustrated when Pinecone wont leave her alone. She will hiss at him and smack him but he seems to love the attention and roll on his back (they do this even when they play also). He most certainly has the annoying younger sibling thing going on.
I don't know what to do because he driving us crazy. Is our home to small? should we let him be an outdoor cat (not really an option but)? I even thought of getting him a younger kitten but if did that Mittens (who isn't a fan of anyone but the four of us in her home) would be miserable so at this point I don't know what to do. Advice?
