Ahhh, of course, it wouldn't be fair without the weight of the jockey on his back. Thanks, Athena. And you look really beautiful in your beads

Thank you, Aetheling -- and you picked the winner! Congratulations!
My thoughts on the race:
1. Mom dozed off 15 minutes before post time. Lucky for us we recorded it. Awwwwwwww, Mom! 2. Coming down the homestretch War of Will faded across the track, from the rail to about 3-wide, just like Maximum Security. The difference is there was no horses right on his butt. 3. Wow! Bodexpress looked like a bucking horse coming out of the gate! 4. Watch the race again, following the loose horse and just coming out of the far turn and into the stretch, an outrider and her horse almost catch him but he swerves back into the race. A great effort on her part. 5. Looks like all the outriders are women and they all look like they have many years of equitation experience. One's horse has those earmuffs Twinkle likes.

It looks like the assistant starter or whatever he's called in gate still had ahold of Bodexpress when they opened the gate. I think perhaps that caused the issue. On another note, did anyfur watch the races on Friday? There's also a race called The Miss Preakness Stakes. It's been around since 1986. A horse named Congrats Gal was doing quite well there for a while, but she started pulling up when they got closer to the wire. She collapsed after she crossed the finish line. They dumped water on her & tried to get her up, but she died. Everyone thinks she neither had a heat stroke or a heart attack. Tests will be done to find out what killed her.

Ahh, Athena, those humans! Good thing you had recorded it for your mom! Interesting points that you pointed out! Twinkle, I read that about that poor horse. What troubles the racing world has had this year.

Yes, the horse would lose because he/she did not carry the proper weight versus the other horses.
Over in Sienna, Italy there is a famous race called the Palio which is a race between neighborhoods (contradas) held in a HUGE city square (a piazza). There are actually two Palios, one in July and one in August. People come from around the world to see these one mile/three lap races. (There are no other races before or after.) Neighborhood pride to win runs BIG, and jockeys are essentially hired guns from outside of town and have been known to whip each other and do other things that the judges in Kentucky might not like a whole lot (to say the least.) Anyway, the reason I mention this is that if a horse throws its rider but crosses first, that horse wins the race!!!

Mom saw the video of the horse slowing down, then they cut to the screen around her after she went down. Horses don't usually have heart attacks and it can happen no matter what they are doing. Mom's friend's horse died of a heart attack in January. He was playing with a friend in the pasture and he just collapsed. Years ago, another of Mom's friend's horse died of a heart attack while standing in his stall. And where Mom took riding lessons, one of the schooling horses slipped on the ice when his rider was leading him back to the barn. People were running all over, trying to help him and keep him calm. Strider kept trying to get up and kept slipping down on the ice. He had a heart attack because he couldn't get to his feet and he died right there. (Mom wasn't there at the time.)
Mom has seen videos of the horse race in Sienna. That's a scary race!
And I think the starter assistant was holding Boexpress because he was still acting up and rearing.

Breaking News: Another Horse Has Died at Santa Anita
As horse racing reels from the shocking death of a horse on Friday at Baltimore’s Pimlico Race Course that marred the weekend of the Preakness Stakes, another horse was killed training across the country at historic Santa Anita Park, thrusting the sport further into controversy during its most important period of the season.
Commander Coil, an unraced 3-year-old gelding, broke down of a shoulder injury during a routine gallop in training hours at the California racetrack. He is the 24th horse to die there since Dec. 26, and track executives still have yet to identify the underlying cause of the fatalities. One executive called the issues “multi-factorial,” but soil experts have not discovered anything unusual at the 84 year-old facility.
California Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D) has called for the state’s horse racing commission to halt racing until four full-time investigators conclude their work studying the horses’ deaths, and state legislators have pledged to hold hearings on the state of the track.
Officials halted racing there in March after 21 equine deaths in a three-month span, but another horse, 3-year-old filly Princess Lili B, was killed after breaking both legs at the conclusion of a timed workout the day after the track reopened. Two weeks later, 5-year-old gelding Arms Runner, broke down during a fall on the turf course.
Before Commander Coil’s death, Santa Anita had gone six weeks without a horse fatality.
“Equine shoulder injuries are rare, especially for a horse that is galloping as opposed to breezing or racing. A comprehensive evaluation will be completed to understand what might have caused this uncommon injury,” Santa Anita owner The Stronach Group said in a statement. The company also owns Pimlico Race Course.
“The Stronach Group remains committed to operating Santa Anita Park with stringent protocols that prioritize the health and safety of horses and riders first and foremost.”
The same day, Congrats Gal, a 3-year-old filly, collapsed of what veterinarians suspect to be a heart attack after the Miss Preakness Stakes at Pimlico.
“The sickening collapse and sudden death of Congrats Gal at Pimlico are proof that the Maryland racing industry has not done enough to protect horses,” Kathy Guillermo, senior vice president of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, said in a statement. “ . . . We will be contacting the district attorney’s office, as we did in California, where the D.A. has appointed a task force to investigate training and veterinary practices.”
Congrats Gal’s death casts an even darker shadow over Saturday’s $1.5 million Preakness, the middle jewel of horse racing’s Triple Crown. The race is already without Kentucky Derby winner Country House, the first Derby champion in 23 years to skip the Preakness, as well as Maximum Security, the horse that crossed the finish line first at Churchill Downs — only to be disqualified for veering across multiple lanes of traffic. Country House was declared the winner after a 22-minute review.
In the aftermath of the controversial finish, owners, trainers and jockeys traded barbs over the stewards’ decision, and Maximum Security’s owner, Gary West, sued the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission to reverse the race’s official result. Jockey Luis Saez, who rode Maximum Security in the Derby, was suspended 15 racing days for failure to “control and guide his mount.”

Oh, that would be nice if your Dad could join the protest.
Now, horses breaking down with pelvis and shoulder injuries -- I've never hear of that! Those bones are deep inside layers of muscle. Something screwy is going on.
