My picks for the Kentucky Derby:

The Japanese horses are good, too, but I'll be patriotic and stay with the Americans.

The Dubai World Cup races were held on Sunday Silence's birthday & many of his decedents did quite well. This year's Kentucky Derby falls exactly 34 years after he won it. The Japanese horses racing today are his great-grandsons. I hope more than anything that they win. I can't go against them, so I am picking.
1st Derma Sotogake
2nd Mandarin Hero
3rd Tapit Trice

Oops! I thought both races were on Saturday. Oh well.
Here are my choices for the Derby:
1. Hit Show 2. Kingsbarns 3. Sun Thunder
(Tee Hee, mom was going to pick Pretty Mischievous because we have a brand new puppy we are training at home, and that describes him perfectly! MOL! My mom is tired! )

Oh, it's hard to pick 'em the first time around. And the more you listen to all the announcers there's always a story that makes you want each horse to win. Then, as we all know, with a large field luck holds a good percentage of who wins.
1. Angel of Empire 2. Disarm 3. Mandarin Hero

The race on today's card, The Pat Day Mile -- Freezing Point was pulled up near the beginning of the race. After the end of the third race, the 3 announcers were talking about how racing could be made more safe for horses when they received the news that Freezing Point had to be euthanized.
One of the Derby horses scratched earlier this week, Lord Miles, was scratched because his trainer, S. Joseph, Jr. had two of his horses collapse on the track and die after they raced this week. On Thursday, the Kentucky Horseracing Commission and the Board of Stewards scratched Joseph's Derby horse, Lord Miles and then Churchill Downs suspended the trainer competing at all of its own tracks indefinately giving the "unexplained sudden deaths of the horses."

A total of 7 horses died at Churchill Downs just in the last few days. One of them was going to be in the Derby. Two died today on Derby day. A total of 5 horses were scratched from the Kentucky Derby. This doesn't include the one who died Thursday. Something odd is going on. I have never seen anything like this & pray I never do again.
On a less horrible note, but still heartbreaking, neither Japanese horse even finished in the money. I was so pulling for them. I thought maybe Sunday Silence would be there to push them across the line in front.
Athena did much better than any other fur on her Derby picks. Congrats! I can't believe I totally forgot to list my Oaks picks! I was going to pick Wonder Wheel, Wet Paint & The Alys Look. Mommy has had alot of job stress lately. They are real shorthanded. She's very overworked. They are getting a couple of new managers, 2 new Secretaries she'll have to train & several new Claims Specialists. They are also switching over to a new timekeeping system in the middle of June & nobody has even been trained on it yet! She's had issues in her personal life too, so we forgot.

Japanese horses never seem to do well in the Derby. Maybe it's the way they warm up -- stable ponies alongside them?
Ah, when mom was still working there were times when a new system was brought in, you were expected to work it without any training or instructions. Mom didn't have too many icky bosses -- two, maybe -- everyone else were OK. Every business seems to be shorthanded; where are all the workers?

I am a member of the Cat Scouts site (it is another cat social networking site like this or Catster) One of my kitty pals, who lives in Louisville, posted on Tuesday that his mom was at the racetrack and the one horse died on the track right in front of her. Living in Louisville, they have always been interested in and followed and attended the horse races. She is very upset over all of this.

Twinkle, you were hoping that Sunday Silence's spirit would help the Japanese horses?
Well, I guess it was Secretariet's spirit because, as they do a little piece on each horse in the Derby, they showed Secretariet's barn at Churchill -- 42 I believe -- and only one Derby horse had been stabled in that section -- Mage.

Ætheling, most of the breakdowns happen on the far side of the racetrack, away from spectators, so sweeping it under the rug is easier than if a horse breaks down in front of the grandstand. Nowdays, the track caller never mentions it during or after the race, and neither do the announcers.
1. racing horses when they are too young (3 and under) 2. racing schedules that are year-round. They used to have winters off. 3. dirt tracts? Has there ever been a comparison of breakdowns on the turf and breakdowns on dirt?
It must be so hard on the grooms/hot walkers/exercise girls to see their charge leave for the race, all excited, bouncing and full of energy and, after the race, to see an empty stall.

Athena, alot of people retired once the pandemic hit. Many left Social Security & many retired other places. I think right now most people are so burned out it's insane. Alot of people are "quietly quitting". That's actually a thing. You still have a job, you just don't apply yourself as normal because you are so tired, fed up & burned out.
Yes I was hoping Sunday Silence's spirit would help his great-grandson's. If they couldn't win, I at least wanted one of them to finish in the money. Mage was stabled right by where Secretariat was, so he must have been there. They kept talking about him, so he had the right to fly down to see what was going on.
Ætheling, mommy has never seen a horse die right in front of her face, but she's seen more than her fair share of breakdowns on TV. Most of them do happen in the backstretch, but not all. Usually they do just try to sweep it away, but they sure cannot just sweep away 7 deaths & 5 scratches in the Derby. I'm interested to see how this will play out.
Apollo, good question. I don't know if a comparison has been done or not. I agree with all three of your points. I couldn't imagine working with a horse everyday & then watching them die over & over. Reforms need to be done NOW.
