Mom still hasn't figured how to carve her pumpkins yet, she can't find a pattern she likes

When mom was little her grandparents still didn't have indoor plumbing. They had an outhouse. Mom hated going in it. No matter how much she checked it out before going in, it never failed that when she was in an "exposed position", she would look up into the corner ceiling of the outhouse and there would be a wasp or the biggest spider she ever did see looking down at her.

I always help mom with the pumpkin. I would put my paw inside and try to scoop out the seeds and goo.

YES, Athena! When mon was a kid all they had at their lake cottage was an outhouse. It was down a hill, and that was spooky enough in the middle of the night. Those spiders in there were pretty horrifying!

Mom was so, so glad when they finally got indoor plumbing. Actually, Grandpa wanted to put indoor plumbing in the house years earlier, but Grandma didn't want it. But eventually the government made everyone in those small towns go with indoor plumbing.

Mama’s grandparents didn’t have an indoor bathroom until she was five years old. And they only got an indoor one then because their adult sons paid for it and had it put in. They were happy with what they had.

The government did give the towns grant money to help out. Most of the people in our town were older back then, and didn't work anymore.

Her time is running out, Macy. Halloween is here in 2 days! Mom would just cut out the usual smile and triangle eyes and nose.

Yeah, Athena, I remember back in the 90s that Tennessee, I think, forced people living out in the country to put in indoor plumbing even though they didn’t want it.

Shannara, that’s how mama carves a jack-o’-lantern. 🎃 Although they haven’t carved one for some years now. When they lived in town, they got trick-or-treaters. Now in the country they don’t.
