Hello, my name is Wendy.
I have a 15 year old female cat, Shirley. She is very lovable, but, she will not let anyone pick her up, she won't sit on your lap, and, she doesn't like human males. I love her so much, and, if I were to ever get another cat myself, I would rescue one with the same issues Shirley has. She needs to feel loved, and, if I can give that to another cat again, I would do it.
She also does not like to be confined. I think something happened to her when she was a kitten, and, because of that, she panics whenever she is shut in any room.
My parents rescued her when she was 7 months old. At the time, they had other cats, and, she adjusted fine with them. Shirley's been without other cats since 2012. In 2018 and 2019, we lost both of our golden retrievers, one was 8 the other was turning 10. Shirley was very close with them.
Yesterday my parents rescued a 5 month old female kitten, Patches. Shirley is very territorial, has hissed, and has even attacked her. I've had to confine her to my room with her litter box in it. Shirley is just now coming out. My parents went to bed late, and, Shirley is just now able to come out. I've spent the day and all night with her. While I don't mind this, she needs to be able to come and go as she pleases like she always has been able to do.
Does anyone have any advice as to how to get Shirley and Patches to get along? I know it hasn’t even been 24 hours, but, I have a feeling that Shirley may never accept Patches.
I would appreciate any advice anyone can give me.
Thank you so much.
