Nowdays, when untried yearlings are sold for millions of $$$$$, Medina Spirit was sold as a yearling at the Keenland, Kentucky sales for $1,000.

Run for the Roses has to be one of the saddest songs ...
Run for the roses as fast as you can, your fate is delivered = race horses are running for their lives. If and when they're no longer winners a long ride to a Mexican slaughterhouse is most likely. Or out-of-sight, out-of-mind owners sell them to Asian race owners. And in Japan and Korea if the horse isn't still winning or producing winners it follows the path of Ferdinand.

Yes, that song is very sad. Everytime I think of Ferdinand it makes me so furious. How in the world can a horse win The Kentucky Derby, Breeders' Cup Classic & Horse of the Year for crying out loud & wind up in a slaughterhouse? Exceller defeated both Seattle Slew & Affirmed in the same race & he wound up in a slaughterhouse as well as many others. He was a bit before my time, but I mostly certainly remember Ferdinand. Crying shame!!

Supposedly, since the Ferdinand incident, some owners are now including buy-back clauses within their stallion contracts. Reportedly, such clauses were included for Kentucky Derby winner Silver Charm (who was moved to Old Friends Equine in Georgetown, Kentucky upon his 2014 retirement after the buy-back clause was invoked) and Dubai World Cup winner Roses in May, both of whom were sent to Japan.
According to recent PETA news, after viewing PETA's sad and startling expose of horse slaughter in South Korea and learning that Kentucky Derby racer Private Vow was recently slaughtered there, The Stronach Group, a major player in the North American horseracing industry, is supporting PETA'S call to ban the sale of thoroughbreds to South Korea.
