Don't know anything about any horse. I'll close my eyes and pick a name to win.

Mom has been watching the Ascot races from the U.K. Those horses bounce of each other and race so close together. If they raced like that here they would all be disqualified.

My picks for the Belmont Stakes:
1. Tapit to Win 2. Tiz the Law 3. Pneumatic
Such a small field. At least they won't get in each other's way.

The parents picked horses in the earlier races as well, for fun. Mama picked Gamine, who won by 15 lengths and set a new record for that race.
The odds were 1-1.
Does that mean that if mama had actually bet on the race, she would have won zero money? 🤔

Don't know about betting. Mom loves horses and has followed whatever racing shown on TV, but she just likes watching them run. Chicago people like their horse racing and racing highlights were shown on the news almost every night. Yes, Gamine really turned it on! She ran so fast her jockey didn't realize she was breaking the record.
As for the Belmont, it was rather underwhelming. I wonder why they shortened the race to make it the shortest of the three this year. I don't see any problem with changing the dates and which race goes first/second/third, but when they change the distance, that's not really "The Belmont".

Oh, Athena (In Memory) , I was going to ask that, too, what the purpose was in shortening the race. I couldn't think of any reason for it.
🐴 It was cool seeing Gamine outrun the other horses and set a record for that race. 🐎
Twinkle (My Sweet Angel) , do you know the answer to my question about the 1-1 odds?

Did an internet search:
The good news for horse racing fans: there will be a Belmont Stakes in 2020, that will take place on June 20. It’ll be the first leg of the Triple Crown instead of the last, with the Kentucky Derby taking place on Sept. 5 and the Preakness being run on Oct. 3.
The other news for racing fans: it’ll be run at 1 1/8 miles and not at its traditional 1 1/2 miles.
So why is that the case?
Check out this quote from New York Racing Association chief exec David O’Rourke, via the New York Times: “It was tough to ask developing 3-year-old horses to go that far after not racing for months.”
Remember, the Belmont is traditionally the longest race. By that time, the thoroughbreds have been through a bunch of races and are in shape. With racing venues closed around the country and world due to coronavirus, the horses may not be in the same kind of shape by June 20, and asking them to run such a long distance. It’s the same reason you can’t just start up an NBA postseason in a week or two after announcing it. The athletes need time to round in form or there will be injury risk.

We watched the Ascot races too. Mommy also noticed about they bumped into each other, but nobody said anything about it. You are right Athena, that would never fly in America.
The Belmont was underwhelming, for sure. Several horses that were going to race got hurt, that's why the field was smaller than usual. I hated that they changed the distance. It's not the same to me. Also having The Belmont first was too weird to me.

Twinkle, thank you! 🤔 So if you bet two dollars, you receive that two dollars BACK in addition to the amount you won. So 2 to 1 odds gets you $6.00, which is a $4.00 profit. I have been staring and staring and staring at that chart, and I think I finally figured out the rest of it. Tell me if I figured this correctly. 2-1 $4.00 won, plus 2.00 back, equals $6.00 You win twice the amount you bet, plus you get back your own bet. 1-1 $2.00 plus 2.00 = $4.00 You win 1 x the amount you bet, plus you receive back the amount you bet. 1-2 $1.00 plus 2.00 equals $3.00 You win 1/2 of the two dollars you bet 1-5 $ 0.40 plus 2.00 equals $2.40 You win 1/5 of the two dollars you bet 3-5 $1.20 plus 2.00 equals $3.20 You win 3/5 of the two dollars you bet 4-5 $1.60 plus 2.00 equals $3.60 You win 4/5 of the two dollars you bet That seemed really complicated at first, but by writing it out like that, bit by bit, I think I understand it now! Did I do that correctly? Thank you!

Athena, thank you for that explanation of why the race was shortened. That makes sense. I could not think what the reason might be.
