So, we're in the hands of whomever created this virtual race in the first place. And although its done mathematically/algorithms, etc., you still can't take into affect weather conditions, track conditions, someone stumbling, pushing, just how the horse feels that day, and the fact that Eddie Arcaro is riding two horses! (Whirlaway and Citation).
So, all scientifically aside, I'm going with my heart ....
1. Seattle Slew 2. Citation 3. Whirlaway
P.S. I may be drawn and quartered for this, but I never really cared for Secretariat. Can't say that out in public, 'cause his fans WOULD hunt me down!

Wow, Eddie Arcaro was a talented guy, riding two horses in the same race!
I hadn't even noticed that. MOL!
I have plenty of mint juleps for everyone, help yourselves!

Thank you, Twinkle. They did a good job creating the horses and the race.
Yes, now I read that they created the outcome according to the horses' race times. Well, doing it that way, Secretariat will win because he had the fastest times.
But -- if they do the same thing with the Preakness, Seattle Slew tied Secretariat's time in that race.
Sorry, I don't want to keep harping on this, but no one seems to acknowledge the fact that all through his racing life, Secretariat was on steriods.

Almost all race horses are always on some sort of drugs. I guess that's one reason why Secretariat gets a pass on that. Also he captured the people's imagination. I was blown away the first time I watched his Belmont. I didn't think what I was seeing was real at first. Nobody expected to see anything like that. He won the first triple crown since 1948 as well. He gave the people what they wanted to see. I also thought he had an interesting look with his coloring, his 3 white legs & I thought his silks were interesting.
Everyone has their favorites & the ones they do not like for whatever reason. My favorite is Alysheba. He captured me the way Secretariat captured most people. A lot of people don't like it when I say this, but I don't like Justify. I don't know why. I just never liked him. A lot of people can't understand how I can't get behind an undefeated triple crown winner like him, but I just can't.

Not steriods. Secretariat was the only horse taking them back then. But in all fairness, back then nobody knew how much steriods increased athletic ability and I believe Secretariat's people gave it to him to just muscle him up. So with what we all know about steriods now, maybe Secretariat's Triple Crown shouldn't be taken away, but maybe have an asterisk after it?
And, like I mentioned, I rooted for Sham. Poor Sham. He, Monarchos and Secretariat are the only horses to EVER run the Derby under 2 minutes and Sham did it bleeding from the mouth after knocking out 2 teeth when he hit the starting gate as the doors flew open. And when Secretariat left him behind in the Belmont, Sham had a hairline fracture of his right front cannon bone. I didn't know that until I read the Wikipedia article.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sham_(horse)
I loved Alysheba! I think he would have won even more races, but it seemed to me his regular jockey, knowing what a great horse he was, would get him pocketed with no racing room, then think Alysheba would be able to get out of trouble and go on to win.
But you have to admire all the Triple Crown winners because winning those 3 races, so close together, being only 3-year olds, and with all that can happen in a race, they do have to be great horses. You have a problem with Justify; mine is Secretariat.

I wanted to wait until I had a chance to view the above mentioned races before I commented. Since the footage is from 1973, it's not the best in quality to try to really study it. I couldn't tell that anything was wrong with Sham in either race. He seemed to hide it well, which shows how good he was in my opinion. Yes, he really made Secretariat earn it in the Kentucky Derby. I didn't know any of this until I read the post above. Sham had an enlarged heart as well, but not as enlarged as Secretariat.
I agree with what you said about Alysheba's jockey too. He did seemed to get him boxed in. Mommy was beyond disappointed when Alysheba lost the Belmont. She did not take it well & cried her eyes out. If ever there was a horse that she wanted to get a triple crown, it was him. She was about to lose her mind in the time between the Preakness & Belmont that year. That's something she'll never forget.
