We don't have any countdown here. When Mom lived in Chicago, they would televise the NY broadcast to time it with our Central Time new year.

We don't have a countdown here, either. Mom doesn't usually watch any of the TV New Year's broadcasts anymore. In fact, sometimes she's already in bed at midnight!

Christmas in Chicago was usually dry but cold. But they almost always had lots of snow on New Year's Eve. One year was really bad, over 2 feet of snow fell and most people had to stay in. It was very cold, too. But after the TV celebration, the Chicago TV stations would show Marx Brothers movies and Fred Astaire movies. Mom got used to that.
