We currently have two cats, one male we got from the shelter about 3 years ago, and another male we rescued from another family who discovered they were allergic to cats 1 1/2 years ago.
We have a big problem with one of our cats. He has been fighting with a neighbor's elderly cat. This has been happening for about 2 years. About 1 year ago we agreed to not let our cat out of the house which has been exceedingly difficult since our cat LOVES being outside. He gets out about once a week despite our best efforts.
About 6 months ago, the neighbor called us up threatening to sue if our cat ever showed up on his property again. Today our cat got out again and got into another fight with the neighbor's cat. But this time the neighbor's wife tried to separate them. Of course, she got scratched and went to the doctor.
These neighbors are nice people but they are also extremely devoted to their cat. So they want us to rehome our cat.
Info: All the cats mentioned have been neutered. No cat has been hurt in any of the altercations. As far as I know our neighbors have taken no steps to prevent altercations (such as keep their cat indoors, put up motion-detecting sprinklers, etc.).
At home, our two cats are perfectly calm. You'd never guess he would fight with other cats.
What are your thoughts? I'd like input from someone who isn't emotionally vested in the situation.
I feel like we are doing everything possible. But there is only so much we can do. We can't undo what is natural cat behavior. Plus I feel like we are doing all the bending.
I will post this in the Cat Behavior section, too.
Thanks in advance for your thoughts.
